Comprehensive Analysis of Transient Overvoltage Phenomena for Metal-Oxide Varistor Surge Arrester in LCC-HVDC Transmission System with Special Protection Scheme

This paper proposes a systematic and deterministic method for metal-oxide varistor (MOV) surge arrester selection based on the comprehensive analysis in line-commutated converter (LCC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. For MOV arrester, this investigates several significant impacts transient overvoltage (TOV) phenomena, which is affected by practical factors such as an operating point of LCC-HVDC system, synchronous machine status power AC passive filter trip, communication delay special protection system (SPS). In order to determine appropriate rating especially TOV, considers pattern, magnitude, duration TOV various fault scenarios electrical with system. A screening study 60 Hz RMS-based balance conducted examining wide range scenarios, then specific test cases that need detailed analysis, electro-magnetic (EMT)-based models are developed approvable boundary setting through equivalent network translation tool. EMT subsequent distinguished cases; result, exact number resistor stacks could be obtained according procedure. The efficacy from proposed procedure verified 1.5 GW DC ± 500 kV symmetric monopole
